Delhi’s Elderly Get a Lifeline: Arvind Kejriwal Launches Sanjeevani Yojana

In a bold move ahead of the upcoming February assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo, has announced a revolutionary healthcare scheme for Delhi’s senior citizens. Dubbed the Sanjeevani Yojana, this initiative promises free and unlimited medical treatment for residents aged 60 and above in both government and private hospitals.

A Promise with No Limits

Breaking away from conventional schemes with cost ceilings, Kejriwal declared, “There will be no upper limit on treatment expenses.” Starting within days, AAP workers will personally visit homes for registrations, providing health cards that will serve as a gateway to these benefits. “Keep this card safe. Once we are re-elected, this scheme will be implemented immediately,” Kejriwal assured.

A Healthcare War Brews in Delhi

The announcement has sparked a new chapter in the ongoing political tussle between the AAP and BJP over healthcare in the national capital. The BJP has long criticized the Delhi government for refusing to implement the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), which offers healthcare benefits to low-income groups nationwide. In fact, seven BJP MPs have filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, demanding the rollout of PMJAY in the city.

Kejriwal’s Sanjeevani Yojana is seen as a direct counter to PMJAY, offering an alternative model designed specifically for Delhi’s aging population. By focusing on a demographic often overlooked in national healthcare schemes, Kejriwal appears to be positioning AAP as the party that prioritizes local needs over broad, one-size-fits-all solutions.

What This Means for Delhi

As the battle for votes heats up, healthcare is emerging as a decisive factor. The Sanjeevani Yojana not only promises to ease the financial burden on senior citizens and their families but also challenges the BJP’s narrative on healthcare governance.

Whether this bold promise translates into electoral success for AAP remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Delhi’s elderly population has become the focal point of a high-stakes political showdown.
