One Nation, One Poll’ Bill Introduced in Lok Sabha Amid Opposition Outcry
New Delhi: The ‘One Nation, One Poll’ push gained momentum today as the government tabled two bills proposing constitutional amendments to synchronize Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Law Minister Arjun Meghwal introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, signaling a significant step toward simultaneous polls across the country.
Sources indicate the bill will now be sent to a joint committee for detailed discussions. The BJP, as the single largest party, will chair the committee and hold the majority of seats. Initially set for 90 days, the committee’s term may be extended if needed.
The introduction sparked immediate and heated protests from the opposition benches. Congress MP Manish Tewari, along with leaders like Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav, Trinamool Congress’ Kalyan Banerjee, DMK’s TR Baalu, and NCP leader Supriya Sule, launched sharp critiques against the bill, demanding its immediate withdrawal.
In contrast, three of BJP’s allies — the TDP in Andhra Pradesh, its state rival YSR Congress Party led by Jagan Reddy, and the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde — threw their support behind the proposal, underscoring its potential significance for electoral reforms.
The tabling of the bill marks the beginning of a critical debate around the feasibility, impact, and implications of ‘One Nation, One Election’.
