PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Guyana: Strengthening Ties with the Indian Diaspora

GEORGETOWN: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guyana, marking the final leg of his three-nation tour that began with the G20 Summit in Brazil. This visit is a milestone for both India and Guyana, as it’s the first time in over 50 years that an Indian prime minister has set foot in the South American nation.

Upon arrival, Modi was greeted with a warm and extraordinary welcome at the airport. In a rare gesture, Guyanese President Irfan Ali was there to receive him, along with more than a dozen cabinet ministers and senior officials. This display of hospitality highlights the importance both nations place on this visit.

During his time in the country, he will hold talks with President Ali to explore ways to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Guyana. One of the key focuses of the visit will be honoring Guyana’s vibrant Indian diaspora, which has been a significant part of the country’s cultural fabric for over 185 years. Modi will also deliver a speech at the Guyanese parliament, further strengthening the bond between the two nations.
